Red Earth and Rain
Avanti! John Storgårds
• Two works by Eero Hämeenniemi as a World Premiere Recording:
Red Earth and Pouring Rain (2008) was composed for one of the leading singers of Indian classical Carnatic music and a very inspiring musician, Bombay Jayashri's deep and dark female voice and The Bird and the Wind (1994) for a high Western soprano. Laura Leisma interprets The Bird and the Wind on this CD.
• Fabulous Avanti! Chamber Orchestra plays on both works with conductor John Storgårds
• Red Earth and Pouring Rain is based on short Tamil love poems from the much loved collection of short poems Kuruntokai. The cycle of five poems tells the story of a couple in love from the point of view of the young lady. Red Earth and Pouring Rain has many improvised solos for Bombay Jayashri and violin virtuoso Minna Pensola, who follows the singer like a shadow. Heikki Nikula has a bass clarinet solo, and percussionists Pungkulam Subramaniam and S. Karthick get their improvised tani avarthanam.
• The influence of India is also apparent in the other song cycle on this CD, The Bird and the Wind. The Bird and the Wind combines Finnish folk poetry with Indian texts. The songs are interspersed with dance movements, and there is a large orchestral climax.--> Eero Hämeenniemi Red Earth and Rain
